The Desert Connection

Why a dolphin habitat in Arizona? Well, you don’t need to live near the beach to be connected to the ocean. The sea affects people even here in the Sonoran Desert, just as those of us living in the desert can have an effect on our oceans.

Did you know: Porpoises and other marine mammals actually live in waters adjacent to the Sonoran Desert about 50 miles from Arizona, in the Gulf of California? In fact, one species, the vaquita, is the world’s most endangered cetacean with fewer than 40 remaining. So increasing public education about conserving our oceans is a critical mission of Dolphinaris Arizona.

The weather over the Pacific Ocean eventually moves inland and affects us here in Arizona.

Our food sometimes includes ingredients from the ocean (did you know algae and kelp are used in peanut butter and frozen foods?).

Dolphinaris seeks to help kids and adults in Arizona understand and appreciate dolphins and the ocean – even if they cannot make a trip to the beach.  It’s a unforgettable family activity in Phoenix.

THE HIGHEST NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

WORLD-CLASS CARE

Taking care of our dolphins is our top priority. We serve our dolphins a well-balanced and portioned diet that includes scheduled feedings and rewards during positive reinforcement training. We have a full team of professionals including staff veterinarians, professional behaviorists and water quality experts who watch out for our dolphins’ welfare every day.  Detailed records enable us to track both the health of our dolphins and the condition of their environment.

ONLY POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Dolphins are taught cooperative behaviors and provided the highest quality of food, enriching habitat, and daily care by a team of professional behaviorists, veterinarians, and water quality experts. All of our interactions with the animals are based on positive reinforcement. These rewards include dolphin appropriate toys, play, water jets, tactile, guest interactions, and so much more.

DOLPHINARIS FOUNDATION: EDUCATION, RESEARCH, & CONSERVATION

EDUCATION

Our educational programs help everyone from local elementary students to university students in veterinary programs.

Books can only go so far. Having real hands-on experience is the best teacher.

Learn more about our education programs.

RESEARCH

Our research programs generate insights that benefits marine life—in human care and the wild.

For example, we collaborated with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on dolphin respiratory research.

Having an in-depth understanding of respiratory physiology in cetaceans will increase our ability to detect diseases earlier.

CONSERVATION

We care for dolphins in our care and in the wild. Our conservation efforts, including our partnership with Universidad Autónoma del Carmen, are designed to help protect the dolphins’ natural environment and to safeguard the health and well-being of bottlenose dolphins in the wild.
