BLU TIP: MAKE THE HOLIDAYS GREENER

For this week’s #BluTipTuesday we’re preparing for the holidays by creating a green Christmas! We encourage you to take the challenge and make your holiday decorations yourself with recycled material.

Here’s an easy, fun way to make an ornament. All you need are string, scissors, markers, and the bottom of any sized water bottle.

  1. Cut the bottom off of the plastic bottle.
  2. Decorate the bottom with your markers.
  3. Cut a small slit on the edge for the string.
  4. Floss the string into the slit & tie the ends.
  5. Hang that beauty up—or give it as a gift!

Here are some other ways to make the holidays greener:

  • Instead of plastic tableware and utensils, use the real thing. Borrow dish sets or go to a thrift store and buy a holiday set.
  • Give meaningful gifts like experiences to museums, parks, or concerts. Or a dessert or healthy snack packaged in reusable mason jars. Consider gifts that will help others conserve, such as stainless-steel water bottles, mugs, or reusable lunch/to-go containers.
  • When holiday shopping, bring your own reusable bags.
  • Recycle any bubble wrap or plastic bags you might receive.

Every act of conservation is a gift to our oceans and the animals that inhabit them.

Happy holidays!
